Responsibilities

The nature of work varies due to the season and/or assignment which may change throughout the year. Work location varies and may be indoors or outside.  Incumbent works individually without immediate supervision, as a member of a team, or as a lead staff depending upon the nature of the job assignment. Incumbent may work primarily in a programming situation as a leader for varied program activities but may have a secondary role in maintenance of the facility or work area.  An incumbent may work primarily as a maintenance individual at various park facilities but have a secondary function as a program leader. The primary programmatic function would include, but is not limited to, instructing specialized classes in arts and crafts, fine arts, physical fitness, dance or aquatics; general supervision of program participants; assisting in the development and implementation of various recreational programs including athletics; performing special assignments such as research projects related to recreation and parks operations; and performing maintenance duties as required to ensure program success and to provide a clean safe working environment.  Incumbent will also assist in conducting leisure-time activities and maintaining Division of Recreation and Youth Services grounds and facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree or higher in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Sports Management, Leisure Services, Business Administration, Communications or a related field AND one year of full-time paid supervisory/leadership experience; OR 

High School diploma (or G.E.D.) AND 6 years of full-time or 7 years of part-time (part-time defined as having worked on average 35 hours/week) paid supervisory/leadership experience in recreation, athletic or leisure time activities.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.

License Requirements

Must have a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain as a condition of employment.

Special Requirements

Within 6 months of appointment, the following certifications must be obtained and maintained as a condition of continued employment:

•First Aid and Adult/Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

•Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP)

Appointment to positions in this classification will require applicants to pass a police background investigation.

Final permanent appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity required by the Immigration and Nationality Act.
