Responsibilities

Designs, writes, and reviews plans and specifications, and prepares cost estimates for engineering projects involving capital improvements including roadway infrastructure and water resources utilities. Ensures construction projects in progress conform to plans specifications and regulations through periodic monitoring; resolves problems with existing systems found through inspection, researching records and communicating with persons involved. Reviews plans, specifications and cost estimates for all plats, proposed utility construction, private construction or demolition projects, and all permit work for adherence to all regulations and construction standards. Through close review, Senior Engineer I's ensure plans and cost estimates of consulting engineers, architects and private contractors conform to specifications and regulations, are economically favorable, and are compatible with present and future City projects.

The current vacancy is in the Department of Water where the above responsibilities are related to water resources engineering design projects, such as: water distribution systems, sanitary sewer collection systems, storm sewer collection systems, water supply and treatment facilities, and water reclamation facilities. In addition to performing design engineering services, the incumbent performs supervisor duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Water Engineering positions:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering AND 6 years of experience in designing and/or constructing capital improvement projects.

Civil Engineering positions:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering AND 6 years of experience in traffic signal design, timing and systems design, computerized signal systems, geometric design, and/or traffic planning and development.


Employment with the City of Dayton as a Municipal Inspector may substitute for one year of the required experience.

A Master’s Degree in an Engineering related field or in Public Administration may be substituted for one year of experience.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Special Requirements

Registration as an Engineer in the State of Ohio at time of appointment, or ability to obtain registration through a reciprocity agreement is required.

Appointment to positions in this classification will require applicants to pass a police background investigation. Final permanent appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, including drug screen, and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity.
