Responsibilities

Legislative Aide I works for the Executive Assistant to the City Commission and are assigned areas of responsibility from the Executive Assistant to the Commission.  Areas of responsibility may be with an individual member of the City Commission or the City Commission Office as a whole.  Work assignments are received from the Mayor, Commissioners, and Executive Assistant to the Commission or Clerk of Commission.  As Commissioners work on a part-time basis, most work assignments of the Legislative Aide I are completed independently with the Executive Assistant to the Commission lending technical assistance on the most complex assignments.  Completed assignments are generally reviewed by the Executive Assistant to the Commission and/or appropriate Commissioner.  

The Legislative Aide I must be familiar with City operation, related outside agencies, and with individual Commissioners’ priorities and views on current issues.  The incumbent must be aware of the Commissioners’ political alliances, their sensitivities towards current issues, individual Commissioner’s lead initiatives, and political ramifications of his/her actions.  The Legislative Aide I utilizes diplomacy in dealing with Commissioners, the public, and City administrators.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years of college in Urban Studies equivalency or Communication Arts AND one (1) year of experience in research, report writing and presentations, public relations, or related areas.

 

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Final permanent appointment is contingent up the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, background investigation, and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity required by the Immigration and Nationality Act.
