Introduction


Responsibilities

Functions at the level of an Emergency Medical Technician according to the Ohio EMS Board Scope of Practice and within the constraints approved by the Dayton Fire Department Medical Director.  Determines the nature and extent of illness or injury of the patient upon arrival at the scene and administers health care to victims until victims are delivered to a hospital emergency room.  Assesses the extent of injury to entrapped patients and gives all possible emergency care and protection.  Assists other rescue team members in removing the patient.  Maintains medical supplies on the ambulance and makes sure the ambulance is in operating condition ready to transport patients.  Performs station maintenance and house watch duties as assigned.  Employees in this classification are routinely offered overtime opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or (G.E.D.).  Must be certified at least as a State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician and must be maintained as a term and condition of continued employment.  Individuals with Paramedic certification are encouraged to apply.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Special Requirements

Must be able to successfully perform all tasks required as a State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician.  Vision without correction must be a minimum of 20/100 in each eye.  Corrected, vision must be a minimum of 20/40 in each eye.

Appointment to positions in this classification will require applicants to pass a police background investigation. Final permanent appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, including drug screen, and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity required by the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. 

The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees subsequent to HR Policy 2.09.
