Responsibilities

Examines plans and specifications of all new construction, alterations, and repairs of buildings for compliance with the architectural and/or heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical code requirements.   Assists in the enforcement of codes against alleged violators, including court appearances when necessary. The incumbent advises internal and external customers regarding code interpretations, construction methods/procedures, finalizing of plans, and planning future projects. The incumbent is held accountable for examining architectural, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical plans and specifications for compliance with local, state, and national codes to ensure that buildings are safe for occupancy. Maintains good public relations with applicants and potential applicants while ensuring that all codes and regulations are uniformly interpreted and applied.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or closely related field.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities or equivalent region.

 

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

 

Special Requirements

Must be registered in the State of Ohio as an Architect or Engineer.

Must possess, or have the ability to obtain within 1 year of appointment, a Master Plans Examiner Certificate of Competency from State of Ohio Board of Building Standards.

Appointment to positions in this classification will require applicants to pass a police background investigation. Final permanent appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, including drug screen, and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity.

Effective July 15, 2019, the City of Dayton adopted the Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy (HR 1.03). Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment.
