Nature and Scope

This is fingerprint identification work at the training level performed under direct supervision.  This sensitive and confidential work consists of learning procedures such as classifying, searching and filing fingerprint cards used in identification of persons

Principal Accountabilities

1. Enters first time arrest cards into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) for examination and retention into Delaware database.  

2. Verifies AFIS examination of first time arrest cards after search through Delaware database.  

3. Searches names of newly received fingerprint cards through manual and computerized name index file to determine possible prior activity.  

4. Files completed fingerprint cards into proper folders for storage and later examination with new cards or latent evidence.  

5. Fingerprints persons for criminal history checks.  

6. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of computer language and operations.
  • Ability to learn AFIS operations and procedures.
  • Ability to learn the legal and other regulatory provisions governing the sensitive and confidential nature of the work.
  • Skill in visual acuity.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures, including filing, record keeping and indexing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to learn the fingerprint portion of the I.A.S. course.

Minimum Qualifications

High School graduate and the ability to successfully complete the required courses to become a Forensic Fingerprint Technician.

Conditions of Employment
