Nature and Scope

This class is responsible for the operation of a computer and for modifying computer programs to process management and program information for an assigned unit.  Supervision is provided by technical or administrative supervisor.  Duties include the operation of a computer, using custom or standard packages; the diagnosis of computer problems, rectifying software or operator error, and modifying computer programs.  Incumbents may operate a computer in a LAN environment.  Principle contacts are with agency clients and vendors for the purpose of obtaining or verifying information in the processing of agency program data and to provide technical assistance concerning system processed information.

Principal Accountabilities

1. Collects, assembles, enters, stores, organizes, manipulates, retrieves and prints data using a computer and peripheral equipment.  

2. Uses and may install standard software packages such as data base processing, spreadsheets, form design or customized software designed for a particular application.  

3. Reviews program forms or printouts to determine the accuracy and consistency of the material being processed.  

4. Detects and analyzes computer problems, defining them to hardware, software or operator error; rectifies operator error and by using manuals and utility software which is used to identify software problems, corrects the problem; hardware defects are referred to the vendor.  

5. Modifies computer programs for meeting program and management information requirements.  

6. May make backup of data tapes of floppy diskettes to provide against loss of data.  

7. May monitor telecommunications data and correct message omissions of errors.  

8. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the operation of a computer and peripheral equipment.
  • Knowledge of an agency’s policies, procedures and other pertinent information required to process data efficiently. 
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Knowledge of standard software packages.
  • Skill in detecting and rectifying operator and software errors.
  • Skill in using a computer to enter, store, organize, manipulate, retrieve and print data.
  • Ability to format and produce a variety of reports.
  • Ability to monitor telecommunications data and correct message omissions or errors.
  • Ability to modify computer programs.
  • Ability to review program forms and printouts to determine the accuracy and consistency of the material being processed.
  • Ability to orally communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and outside vendors.
  • Ability to operate a computer and peripheral equipment in a LAN environment.
  • Ability to install software.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of the operation of a computer and peripheral equipment.  
  2. Knowledge of standard software packages.  
  3. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of software maintenance and modification.
