Summary Statement

The Seasonal Historical Park Interpreter is responsible for assisting with program development and conducting interpretive programs that will increase the public’s awareness of their surrounding environment and foster the appreciation, enjoyment, and utilization of Cape Henlopen State Park. Duties will include assisting with the museum’s collection and working with historic weapons at Fort Miles. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Interpret the history of Fort Miles to visitors daily.
  • Lead school and public historical programs tied to state standards to increase awareness and understanding of Delaware’s cultural resources.
  • Develop and maintain exhibits, park bulletin boards, and educational material.
  • Assist with the museum’s artifact collection.
  • Become black powder certified and fire a World War II-era artillery piece.
  • Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Perform custodial services in restrooms, offices, and other rooms in the historic area.
  • Must demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as required.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Historical Park Interpreter
  1. College coursework in history or interpretation.
  2. Experience teaching and/or interpretation with public groups.
  3. Experience with care and maintenance historical artifacts, and/or research.
  4. Knowledge of WWII history and local Delaware history preferred.
  5. Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  6. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.

Conditions of Hire

Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

As a condition of hire, applicants for this position must successfully pass a Swim assessment.

As a condition of hire you must possess a valid Black Powder Safety certification OR obtain one within 90 days of employment.
