Summary Statement

This position is responsible for all community outreach efforts to engage the public and educate them about the Department. The position is also responsible for staff supervision, the division’s budget/ expenditures and hiring/leave/training/discipline for the division. Principal contacts are with the Director of Community Relations, the Cabinet Secretary, Division Directors, outside vendors, and customers. Leadership, problem solving, and extensive management experience is required.

Essential Functions

  • Promotes the department's image consistent with the overall direction of the agency. 
  • Oversees all community outreach events including registration, setup/breakdown, run of show, and staffing of events. 
  • Oversees major public events including invitations/RSVPs, venue reservation, setup/breakdown, run of show, and staffing of events. 
  • Coordinates the timely assembly and distribution of the weekly newsletter. 
  • Supervise staff. 
  • Oversee hiring, leave requests, training and discipline for division staff. 
  • Handles media inquiries at the request of the Division Director. 
  • Develops and manages the division’s operating budget; manages multiple vendors including contract negotiations and compliance with state laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Director of Community Relations

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Five years' experience in developing, planning and directing public events, campaigns, programs, or services to meet community needs. 
  2. Five years' experience in public relations or media relations to establish and promote a positive image and inform or influence specific audiences through the use of internal and external communications such as public forums, print or electronic media, speech writing, writing/editing, marketing, advertising, or special events. 
  3. Five years' experience in public speaking which includes gathering, preparing and presenting information to the public or media groups. 
  4. Three years' experience in event planning. 
  5. Three years' experience in budget development and management. 
  6. Three years' experience in staff supervision.
