The DNERR has two main components, the Blackbird Creek Reserve in Townsend and the St. Jones Reserve in Dover. These sites include both brackish and freshwater estuaries, and represent the diverse estuarine ecosystems found throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Summary Statement

A variety of seasonal positions may be available at the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve (DNERR), in the Division of Climate, Coastal and Energy: 

Assistant Education Coordinator: $16.00 - will include creating and running school and public programs, developing instructional materials, creating content for social media, and assisting with the planning and coordination of special events and teacher trainings.  This position also helps with exhibit animal care.

Community Engagement Specialist: $16.00 - responsible for community engagement, volunteer coordination and communications. Duties include community outreach and events, developing print materials, social media content, etc., and volunteer program management.

Work is performed under various weather conditions. Additional work on weekends, evenings and holidays may be scheduled.

Essential Functions

  • May plan and lead daily activities for community outreach events, school outreach and public programs.
  • May lead outdoor sport activities such as hikes, canoeing, boat trips and field trips.
  • May assist with graphic design of printed brochures and program flyers.
  • Ensure a fun, educational and safe environment for visitors.
  • Assist in the upkeep and posting of materials to the Reserve social media sites.
  • May supervise and manage volunteers.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and have fun.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Assistant Education Coordinator
  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. One year's experience working with children and young adults such as academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher.
  3. Knowledge of environmental education, biology, ecology or a related field.
  4. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming.
  5. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
Community Engagement Specialist
  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. One year’s experience in communications, public relations, marketing, customer service or related fields.
  3. One year's experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers.
  4. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  5. Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  6. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
