Summary Statement

This position, under a Nurse, provides and assists with daily living skills, activities, and quality care for residents with intellectual disabilities. Duties: assisting with feeding, toileting, and ambulation; visual observations; monitoring and recording vitals; implementing plans and therapeutic plans; ensuring safety and well-being; and other related duties. Associated with this position, the State provides tuition costs for Certified Nursing Assistant schooling at an approved vendor's location.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.  Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Attends required classes including/not restricted to facility policies/procedures, nursing/therapeutic support methods, safety/security.
  • Receives hands-on training, observing/assisting professional and higher level non-professional nursing/therapeutic staff.
  • Monitors/records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, nutritional intake/output. Alerts professional staff to significant irregularities.
  • Implements prescribed treatment plans involving reality orientation, sensory stimulation, range of motion exercise, and application of splints/braces. Provides oral/written description of individual's physical/behavioral change.
  • Observes individual activities providing oral/written report of unusual/hazardous behavior.
  • Observes/supervises individuals within facility surroundings ensuring appropriate  location/security.
  • Escorts/is responsible for individuals traveling to social/recreational activities and medical appointments on/off campus.
  • Participates on interdisciplinary care team providing information about the individual's overall physical condition, abilities, and behavioral characteristics.
  • Applies appropriate interventions to prevent or de-escalate inappropriate behaviors.
  • Assists individual with personal hygiene.
  • Maintains individual surroundings ensuring appropriate infection control/sanitary conditions, care/storage of linens and clothing.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Nursing Assistant
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months' experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  2. Knowledge of nursing procedures such as monitoring or recording temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration and nutritional intake/output.
  3. Knowledge of narrative report writing.

Conditions of Hire

As part of the program requirements, applicants must successfully complete the program and earn their CNA certification through a state-approved school. Approved schools include Bear Institute, Delaware Skills Center, Sussex Tech, and all Delaware Technical Community College campuses.

Pre-employment Drug Testing: Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.

Upon a conditional offer, the applicant must undergo a pre-employment base line two step tuberculin skin test (TST) as part of the hiring process.

Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.
