Summary Statement

Reporting to the Administrative Office of the Courts ("AOC") Court Interpreter Program Coordinator ("Coordinator"), Court Interpreters perform a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an assigned and as-needed basis for the Delaware Courts and for parties to proceedings, including witnesses, defendants, attorneys, judges, other court personnel and the public. The AOC Court Interpreter Program is seeking to hire one full-time English-Spanish Court Interpreters to deliver linguistic services in primarily high-volume calendars in the Sussex County Family Court located in the city of Georgetown, Delaware (Sussex County). The selected candidate may be required to interpret in other courts and counties as needed and must have the ability to travel statewide.

Preferred Qualification

Applicants who do not possess these preferred qualifications may still be considered for the position if they are certified and possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the Job Requirements section.

  1.  Experience with ZOOM and Microsoft Teams
  2. Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  3. Experience using recording hardware and software

Essential Functions

  1. Must be able to deliver consecutive and simultaneous interpretation and sight translation at court proceedings and for other court-related programs in a manner consistent with the Code of Professional Responsibilities for Court Interpreters.
  2. Must be able to translate at the direction of the Coordinator material which may include, but not limited to, court forms, website material, courthouse signage and scripts for telephone greetings and/or recorded instructions. 
  3. Must be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and respectfully in all modes of communication and with a diverse mix of people, including judges, court staff, attorneys, and members of the public.
  4. Perform other language access duties as needed or assigned, such as providing general court information at an information counter to the non-English speaking public or assist with the Limited Legal Assistance program.
  5. Must be able to use, maintain, safeguard and inventory equipment used by interpreters such as but not limited to simultaneous interpretation equipment and tools used for video remote and telephonic interpretation.
  6. Must be able to assist the Coordinator during meetings, presentations, trainings, and any other administrative duties that may be assigned by the Coordinator. This may include proctoring interpreter exams and serving as a mentor.
  7. Must be a team player and able to maintain good working relationships with a diverse group of people. This includes communicating effectively with interpreters to plan coverage.
  8. Must have good organizational and time management skills. This includes the ability to review the docket, receive calendar assignments from court staff/Coordinator, and accurately complete daily activity schedules, logs, or other documentation as required.
  9. Must be able to work independently.
  10. Must be punctual and reliable.

Additional Posting Information

  • Interpreter must be in good standing with the Administrative Office of the Courts of the State of Delaware.
  • Interpreter must complete a minimum of twelve (12) continuing education credit hours every two years.
  • Interpreter must possess a valid driver's license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • A qualified candidate is expected to be present in-person to perform their duties. Interpreter duties involve a lot of walking (within judicial branch facilities) and involve sitting for long periods of time. 

License,Registrations and Certifications

The individual appointed to this position must have interpreted in State and/or Federal courts for three of the last five years AND possess at least one (1) of the three (3) certifications below:

  • A current and valid Court Interpreter Certification issued by the state of Delaware in the Spanish language.
  • A current and valid Court Interpreter Certification issued by a state member of the Consortium, now the Council for Language Access in the Courts in the Spanish language.
  • A certification from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts (Federal Court Interpreter Certification) in the Spanish language

Conditions of Hire

  •  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.
  • Direct deposit of paychecks is required as a condition of hire.
  • Valid State issued Driver's License
