Deputy Attorney General Civil Division /Defensive Litigation Unit

Delaware's Attorney General, the State's chief law enforcement officer, has a broad responsibility to combat crime, uphold civil rights, safeguard families, provide legal services to entirety of state government, and fight fraud. In the Civil Division, approximately 80 attorneys provide legal support to the executive branch agencies in the form of general counsel advice, administrative hearing prosecutions, board representation, and all stages of civil litigation.  Attorneys in the Civil Division enjoy a 37.5 hour work week with true work/life balance including: a hybrid work environment, no billable hours, generous paid time off, affordable benefits plans, free trainings and CLE, 12 weeks paid parental leave, student loan forgiveness, pension eligibility, and a supportive collaborative work environment.

The Department of Justice (“DOJ”) seeks a Deputy Attorney General (“DAG”) to serve as a civil litigation attorney, representing the State and its employees in tort, primarily automobile accident, causes of action.  This DAG position is in the Civil Division, Defensive Litigation Unit (“DLU”), in New Castle County. The Deputy Attorneys General in the Defensive Litigation Unit defend the State, its agencies, officials and employees in civil litigation in a wide variety of matters.  Primarily, this position works with the State Coverage Office in defending personal injury causes of action brought against the State. Cases are handled in both state and federal court. Qualified applicants must be able to effectively handle civil litigation, develop a good working relationship with other Deputy Attorneys General, support staff, and clients and must have the ability and determination to learn new areas of the law.  Membership in Delaware Bar required.

This DAG will have other comparable duties, as well as handling additional assignments as directed by the State Solicitor, Deputy State Solicitor, Unit Head, or Assistant Unit Head.

Pay Grade 12 DAG I               Salary Range $86,664/min - $95,329/max

Pay Grade 14 DAG II             Salary Range $100,562/min  $105,468/max 

Pay Grade 16 DAG III            Salary Range $111,069/min  $113,509/max

Pay Grade 18 DAG IV           Salary Range $122,094/min  $128,010/max 

Pay Grade 20 DAG V             Salary Range $137,215/min  $147,318/max 

Membership in Delaware Bar is required.  The most qualified candidates have some prior general litigation experience; however, such expertise and experiences are not required for selection. The DAG should be able to work independently, meet deadlines, and communicate clearly with client agencies, and should have demonstrated legal ability and a thorough knowledge of relevant laws and court rules. The DAG must have a willingness to travel within the state when needed to meet departmental needs and court schedules.
