Introduction

The Division of Watershed Stewardship manages and protects the state’s soil, water and coastlines. It uses a comprehensive array of watershed-based programs to ensure proper stewardship of Delaware’s natural resources.

Summary Statement

This position is the Sussex County Watershed Coordinator. Duties involve working with federal, state, and local governments, while also working with non-profits and communities to plan and implement practices which improve watershed environmental health, and directly includes coordination with the Center for the Inland Bays and the Chesapeake Bay Program. The position will have mostly office with some field work including site visits for collecting data on vegetation, hydrology, geology, best management practices, and land use.  Office work will involve using MS Office entering data, creating environmental assessments, using ArcGIS, completing calculations, caring for equipment, managing data files, writing scientific reports, and giving environmental presentations for various audiences.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
     
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
     
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
     
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
     
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III 
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  2. Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
  3. Three years experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  4. Three years experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  5. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  6. Six months experience in technical report writing.
