Summary Statement

Reporting to the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) Court Interpreter Program Coordinator ("Coordinator"), Court Interpreters perform a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an assigned and as-needed basis for the Delaware Courts and for parties to proceedings, including witnesses, defendants, attorneys, judges, other court personnel, and the public. The AOC Court Interpreter Program is seeking to hire one full-time English-Spanish Court Interpreter to deliver linguistic services in primarily high volume calendars in the Sussex County Courthouse located in Georgetown, Delaware (Sussex County). The selected candidate may be required to interpret in other courts and counties as needed and must have the ability to travel statewide.

  •  Experience with ZOOM and Microsoft Teams 
  •  Knowledge of the Microsoft Office and experience using recording hardware and software. 

Job Requirements

The individual appointed to this position must have interpreted in State and/or Federal courts for three (3) of the last five (5) years and possess at least one (1) of the three (3) certificates below:

  • A current and valid Court Interpreter Certification issues by the State of Delaware in the Spanish language. 
  • A current and valid Court Interpreter Certification issued by a state member of the Consortium, now the Council for Language Access in the Courts in the Spanish language 
  • A certification from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts in Spanish language 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Must be able to deliver consecutive and simultaneous interpretation services in the desired language at court proceedings and for other court-related programs at the direction of the court or the Coordinator. 
  • Must be able to sight translate for the benefit of the court, documents including, but not limited to, court forms. statements of probable cause, and other documents. 
  • Must be able to translate court-related material which may include, but is not limited to, court forms, website material, courthouse signage and/or scripts for telephone greetings or recorded information. 
  • Must be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and respectfully in all modes of communications and with a diverse mix of people, including judges, court staff, attorneys, and members of the public. This includes the ability to notify the court of any issues or situations that may impede the interpreter's performance. 
  • Perform other language interpretation duties as assigned, such as providing general court information at an information counter to the non-English speaking public, processes documents related to interpretation, or assist with the Limited Legal Assistance program. 
  • Must be an independent learner with the ability to research and understand terminology used in court, which may include but not be limited to legal, technological, scientific, and/or medical terminology.
  • Must be able to use, maintain, safeguard and inventory equipment used by interpreters such as but not limited to simultaneous interpretation equipment and tools used for video remote interpretation and telephonic interpretation. 
  • Must be able to assist the Coordinator. This may include proctoring interpreter exams and serving as a mentor. 
  • Must be a team player and be able to maintain good working relationships with a diverse group of people. 
  • Must have good organizational and time management skills. This includes the ability to review the docket, receive calendar assignments from court staff/Coordinator, and accurately complete daily activity schedules, logs, or other documentation as required. 
  • Must be able to work independently. 
  • Must be punctual and reliable. 

Additional Posting Information

  • Interpreter must be in good standing with the Administrative Office of the Courts of the State of Delaware. 
  • Interpreter must perform all services in a manner consistent with the Court Interpreter Code of Professional Responsibility. 
  • Interpreter must complete a minimum of twelve (12) continuing education credit hours every two years.

Conditions of Hire

  • Criminal background check: A satisfactory fingerprint based criminal background check administered by the Delaware State Police is required as a condition of hire. 
  • Direct deposit of paychecks is required as a condition of hire.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
