DVI Teachers of
the Visually Impaired (TVI) are responsible for providing itinerant vision
related education services to students in a variety of settings such as public
schools, charter schools, medical facilities, homes, and day care centers.
The TVI is a critical member students’ Individualized Education Plan teams.
Using the Expanded Core Curriculum, TVI performs functions such as Braille
instruction, functional vision and learning media assessments, adapting core
curriculum, and consultation services. This position collaborates with
families, school personnel, and related service providers and agencies.
Qualified licensed special educators without TVI certification may be eligible
to achieve credentials through the Alternate Route to Certification
program. DVI teachers must work a 10 month plus 38-day schedule.

DHSS does not provide employment-based sponsorship.
Applicants hired without a Teacher of the Visually Impaired
(TVI) Certification will be required to pursue one after hire through an
approved Alternate Route to Education program. Any costs paid by DHSS
towards this effort will be subject to reimbursement if 3 years of employment
within DVI are not successfully completed.
Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
