Introduction

Before the pond existed, St. Georges Creek flowed through the hardwood forest and was the site of several Native American hunting camps. The creek was dammed in the early 1800's when the C & D canal was built. Water from the pond was used to fill the locks of the canal and power a small mill. This area was first used as a state park in 1963.

Summary Statement

The main duties of this job are to work weekly themed summer camps at Lums Pond State Park and assist with activities and activity planning for each week. These camps are for children 6 years to 13 years old. Camps also include Counselors-In-Training (14-17 years) which the assistant camp director helps mentor. In the absence of the summer camp director, the assistant camp director takes the lead role in the camp team. This person is also needed to reinforce and strengthen a positive, fun, and safe camp environment for campers, interns and CIT’s throughout the summer. Helps keep camp building and supplies clean and organized. Communicate with other team members.

Essential Functions

  • May develop and facilitate educational programs for schools and special events.
  • May lead school environmental education programs tied to state standards to increase student understanding of Delaware’s natural and cultural resources.
  • May deliver interpretive programs to participants of all ages in a variety of contexts.
  • Provides general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Distributes interpretive publications.
  • May lead educational and recreational hikes, canoe and kayak trips plus programs for park visitors.
  • May include live animal care and handling.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Park Assistant Camp Director

  1. At least 20 years of age.
  2. One year experience working in a camp program for children or young adults.
  3. One year experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers.
  4. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming.
  5. Knowledge of local plants, animals or history.
  6. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
