Summary Statement

Position oversees Delaware’s deer management program through research and monitoring programs; conveys research findings through reports, presentations, and technical advice; and represents the Division on various state and regional committees where overnight out of state travel is required. Position collects, analyzes, and presents harvest data; designs and implements research and management projects; coordinates disease monitoring efforts including those involving Chronic Wasting Disease and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, and reviews and develops regulations concerning the management of deer in Delaware. Position will conduct surveys to assess the deer population across the state, will update and implement Delaware’s Deer Management Plan and works directly with other biologists to provide recommendations and guidance to farmers and communities experiencing negative impacts from deer and has oversight of the Delaware Sportsmen Against Hunger Program. Position assists with the development of annual budgets, grants, and contracts.

  1. Master's degree in Wildlife biology or closely related field.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
     
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
     
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
     
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
     
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III 
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  2. Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
  3. Three years experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  4. Three years experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  5. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  6. Six months experience in technical report writing.
