Summary Statement

Dance/Movement Therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement to further client's cognitive, social, physical, and spiritual growth. The incumbent aims to facilitate healthy experiences that foster growth through the body-mind connection in order to explore and increase self-awareness and self-esteem, connecting with others and building healthy social skills.  Body movement is used as a way to assess an individual well-being.  Dance/Movement Therapy is ideal for individuals with dementia, developmental delays, as well as those who struggle to find words to express their thoughts.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Administers treatment, applying knowledge of applicable therapy discipline. 
     
  • Plans and prepares written treatment plans based on evaluation of individual's data.
     
  • Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages and adjusts treatment to achieve maximum benefit.
  • Instructs, motivates and assists individuals in performance of various activities and use of support devices.
      
  • Instructs individuals, their families and other treatment staff in treatment procedures.
       
  • Prepares records and reports on individual's progress.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Therapist III
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher.
  2. At least two years experience providing professional therapy services.
  3. Registered Dance Therapist by the American Dance Therapy Association or eligible for registration.

Conditions of Hire

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.

Union:  As a condition of accepting employment, the person selected for this position shall join and pay dues to the labor organization or may, instead not join but pay a service fee no greater than the dues.  The labor organization has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other work related purposes.
