Summary Statement

This individual will be responsible for the care and preservation of the historical artifact collections in the possession of Delaware State Parks. The documentation of these items should include photographs, a written description, measurements, acquisition & provenance information if available, condition assessment, physical location, and the assignment of a unique ID number.  In addition, this person will evaluate the collections storage areas and develop a plan for their improvement to include environmental condition monitoring, integrated pest management, fire protection, and disaster planning/preparedness.

  • Develop & maintain working relationships with other internal and external collections partners to ensure objectives set forth in the Division Collections Policy are maintained and that Collections Policies are followed
  • Conduct research utilizing on-line tools and printed materials, maps, pictures, field surveys, and oral histories.
  • Organize data in preparation of technical reports, historic evaluations and historic documentation, including file management, scanning and copying.
  • Recommend and implement a plan to complete inventory entry of extant Division collection into Past Perfect museum database.
  • Photographic documentation, including processing and formatting digital files.
  • Assist with development of park history content for Division website.
  • Deliver cultural heritage programs to participants of all ages in a variety of contexts.
  • Train & supervise volunteers, interns, and seasonal employees to accomplish various facets of this project such as database entry, preservation/conservation procedures, housekeeping, and building/storage area maintenance.
  • This position is statewide and may travel to different Park sites each day.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Collections Specialist

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of an Associates degree or higher in Museum studies History, American Studies or a closely related subject.
  2. Two years of experience with museum or archival collections and collections management software (i.e. - Past Perfect).
  3. Six months experience in using standard computer software programs for word processing, spreadsheets or databases.
  4. Six months experience of cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation.
  5. Six months experience of public speaking or interpretation.
  6. Possession of a valid driver's license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
