Originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, Pea Patch Island also became a Union prison camp during the Civil War, housing up to as many as 12,595 Confederate prisoners of war at one time.

Summary Statement

A variety of seasonal park positions are available at Fort Delaware State Park, which may include the following:

Grounds Maintenance: $9.25/hr - responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities, and equipment to include lawn mowing and custodial work, schedule is Monday – Friday and must be willing to work around boats and water.

Boat Operator $12.00 -$14.00/hr - operate multiple styles of boats transporting people, equipment, and vehicles across the Delaware River.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Duties will vary for each position.
  • May maintain and compiles fiscal and narrative records and reports.
  • May operate landscaping equipment and use of hand and power tools. May Perform custodial services in restrooms, offices, and other buildings.
  • May assist in electrical and plumbing maintenance.
  • May set-up, monitoring and clean-up support for park programs and special events. 
  • Operate motorboats to transport people and equipment on the Delaware River & Bay area.
  • Change oil and check fluids on motorboat.
  • Provide excellent customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and good communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Grounds Maintenance

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Experience using landscaping equipment and hand or power tools. (Grounds only)
  3. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving.

Boat Operator

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  2. Possession of a state-issued boater education card or NASBLA-approved boating safety course certificate.
  3. Experience operating a boat.
  4. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
