Summary Statement

This position is responsible for inspection and testing work done in regulating all commercial transactions involving weighing or measuring; regulating all devices used commercially to determine weight, measure or count; and enforcing the Delaware Packing and Labeling Regulations. Applicants must be able to follow directions, safely operate various equipment and standard and automatic transmissions. The primary work locations will be New Castle County and City of Wilmington with travel to Dover approximately once every two weeks.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Tests retail store scales, large platform scales and motor truck scales up to a capacity of 150,000 pounds.
     
  • Tests flow meter devices such as gasoline pumps, fuel oil truck meters and propane meters.
     
  • Tests packaged and canned items for net weight as stated in the label.
     
  • Performs mathematics such as calculating percentages and averages.
     
  • Explains statutory requirements and test procedures to owners and managers of businesses.
     
  • Takes appropriate action in cases of violations, mislabeled products removed from shelves and inaccurate devices ordered to be repaired. Suspected fraud is reported to supervisor for possible criminal action.
     
  • May appear in court as a witness.
     
  • May participate in fraud investigations.
     
  • Prepares reports and keeps records.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Weights and Measures Inspector I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of inspecting, testing, weighing and measuring devices.
  2. Knowledge of math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  3. Knowledge of record keeping.
  4. Knowledge of applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  5. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving). 

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Weights and Measures Inspector II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six month experience in weights and measures inspection work involving weighing, scanning, timing, measuring and metering devices.
  2. Six months’ experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  3. Six months experience in enforcing compliance with laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  4. Six months’ experience in record keeping.
  5. Six months’ experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  6. Knowledge of conducting investigations which includes conducting interviews to obtain confidential information, gathering evidence and documenting findings.
  7. Possession of a valid CDL Class B Driver's License with Airbrake Endorsement (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Conditions of Hire
