Introduction

 

Fort Delaware is a Civil War era river defense site that served as a prisoner-of-war facility during the American Civil War. The fort reveals remarkable stories of human achievement, tenacity, and endurance. 

 

Summary Statement

This position works in conjunction with the Park Superintendent II and Fort staff members in accommodating guests at Fort Delaware which housed prisoners during the civil war.  Guests can interact with interpretive staff who present the daily activities of those present during the Summer of 1864.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Interprets and applies park rules and regulations and works with Department law enforcement to ensure safety and security of park visitors.
       
  • Oversees revenue collection, recording and deposit. Prepares grant requests and manages budget for special facilities.
     
  • Plans and coordinates maintenance, visitor programs and services and fiscal administration to ensure all areas and facilities are functioning according to established standards.
     
  • Develops and conducts interpretive/environmental education programs and recreational events.
     
  • Assists park visitors and the public by providing information, first aid/emergency care and attention to concerns that may occur within or proximate to the park boundaries.
     
  • Assigns projects, reviews progress and coordinates staff activities to ensure visitor safety and satisfaction and accomplishment of park objectives.
     
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with adjacent landowners, park volunteers, contractors, vendors, community groups, and park benefactors.
     
  • Ensures public safety through regular inspection of park facilities and grounds and review of park law enforcement activity.
     
  • Maintains and compiles fiscal and narrative records and reports.
     
  • May schedule, assign and review the work of full time and seasonal park staff.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Park Superintendent I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience working in natural resources, parks, historic sites or recreation.
  2. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  3. Knowledge of managing diverse activities in support of operational, project or program services.
  4. Knowledge of planning, developing, and implementing educational or recreational programs or special events.
  5. Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.

Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

As a condition of hire, the applicant must show proof of boater education (a state-issued card or NASBLA-approved certificate) or successfully complete a NASBLA approved boating safety course within 90 days of employment.
