Summary Statement

This position is responsible for a variety of maintenance work related to the support of DelDOT's traffic signals and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment. Selected candidate will install, maintain, modify, adjust, test, troubleshoot, and repair traffic control signals, related communication, and ITS field devices. Position has rotational on-call duties and is responsible to respond to emergency situations (including nights, weekends, and holidays). Selected candidate will follow applicable safety procedures, operate equipment such as bucket trucks, underground locating equipment, and electrical test equipment. Candidate will need to be physically able to lift materials such as pedestrian signal poles, junction well lids, and other traffic signal equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of intelligent transportation systems equipment. 
     
  • Repairs copper-wired, fiber-optic, and wireless communication systems related to intelligent transportation systems equipment.
     
  • Tests intelligent transportation systems equipment using detection software and a variety of testing devices such as multi-meters, meggars, GPS equipment, and oscilloscopes. 
     
  • Interprets blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams for the purpose of diagnosing intelligent transportation systems equipment. 
     
  • Applies the standards, principles, and practices of the department safety manual, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and the National Electrical Code. 
     
  • Responds to emergencies relating to problems and situations involving intelligent transportation system equipment. 
     
  • Transfers data to and from field unit devices such as traffic signal controllers, piezoelectric axle sensors, and automatic data recorders into a computer database. 
     
  • Detects, locates, and marks out underground utilities. 
     
  • May perform field counts for traffic control and timing. 
     
  • Operates motorized equipment such as an aerial lift device with extended arm for purposes of repairing and replacing intelligent transportation systems equipment.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of electronics or electrical installation.
  2. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Intelligent Transportation Systems Technician II
Applicants must have education, training, and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in electronics.
  2. Six months experience in electrical installation.
  3. Experience in operating an aerial-lift device.
  4. Knowledge of diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing intelligent transportation systems equipment.
  5. Knowledge of interpreting the National Electrical Code.
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16.  This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.

As a condition of hire the successful applicant must be able to report to their duty station within sixty (60) minutes to provide timely response to vehicle or operational emergencies, as stand-by is required for this position.
