Summary Statement

This class is primarily involved in operating the movable bridges and will work on the Woodland Ferry as a deck hand as needed.  This class will also be involved in completing basic repairs in multiple trade fields and performing routine preventative maintenance and repair work within various structures and transportation related infrastructure including but not limited to roadways, bridges, guardrail and movable bridges. This position must be available to work overtime as needed, and during storm events and other emergency events on short notice and in some cases no advance notice.

Upon satisfactory completion of departmental promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be eligible to be promoted to the next level within the classification series. Please note, the next level classification series are part of a labor organization. These positions are classifications organized under a collecting bargaining agreement that has been elected by employees as their representative and other applicable terms and conditions of employment on its individual terms.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.  Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.
  • Assists mechanics and skilled trades workers in basic and routine repair and maintenance functions such as plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and other trades operations.
  • Participates in inspection as assigned to spot preventative maintenance problems.
  • Repairs roof leaks, pumps water, sweeps, patches pot holes, helps inspect vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Assists in snow/ice removal, grass cutting.
  • May pick up and transport supplies and materials.
  • May perform highway lighting or drawbridge maintenance.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: 

  1.  Knowledge of operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools used in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.

As a condition of hire you must possess a valid driver's license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.

Selection Process
