Cape Henlopen's beaches attract thousands of visitors who enjoy everything from ocean swimming, boating, fishing, and kayaking to clamming, paddle-boarding and wind-surfing. But Cape Henlopen offers more than just the ocean and bays.  A wide selection of activities and programs for children and adults are led by Seaside Nature Center staff each week.

Summary Statement

A variety of seasonal park Naturalist positions are available at Cape Henlopen State Park, which may include the following:

  1. Park Naturalist/Interpreter: Responsible for developing and conducting interpretive programs that will increase the student's and visitor's awareness of their surrounding environment and foster the appreciation, enjoyment and utilization of Delaware State Parks' cultural and natural resources.  In addition, this position involves the care and maintenance of the Nature Center's live animal exhibits.
  2. Assistant Day Camp Director: Assists with planning and preparation of week-long educational day camps for students ages 5-12.  

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled to meet facility needs.   

For Camp positions - Monday through Friday will be needed throughout the camp season.  Additional work on weekends, evenings and holidays may be scheduled.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • May deliver interpretive programs to participants of all ages in a variety of contexts.
  • Provides general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Distributes interpretive publications.
  • May lead educational and recreational hikes, canoe and kayak trips plus programs for park visitors.
  • May include live animal care and handling.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Park Naturalist/Interpreter

  1. Six months experience working with children and young adults such as environmental educator/classroom assistant, academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, or youth volunteer.
  2. Experience with care and handling of animals.
  3. Knowledge of natural, cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation.
  4. Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  5. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Assistant Day Camp Director

  1. Must be at least 20 years of age.
  2. One year experience working in a camp program for children or young adults.
  3. One year experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers.
  4. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming.
  5. Knowledge of local plants, animals or history.
  6. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Conditions of Hire

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

As a condition of hire, applicants for this position must successfully pass a Swim assessment.
