Summary Statement

A variety of seasonal park maintenance positions may be available at Alapocas Run/Wilmington State Parks:

  1. Park Maintenance-(General): $12.00 – three positions Spring/Summer - responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment in a park or a recreation area.
  2. Park Maintenance (Skilled): $12.00 - $14.00 – two positions Year-round responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment in a park or a recreation area.
  3. Summer Horticulturist: $13.00 - responsible for assisting maintenance staff with all aspects of maintaining the park grounds and its facilities. This position will have a strong focus on maintaining the landscape planting beds throughout both parks.

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled to meet facility needs.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Performs grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, athletic field maintenance, landscape bed maintenance, trash removal, vegetation removal, leaf removal and snow/ice removal.
  • Performs custodial services in restrooms, offices and other buildings.
  • Operates landscaping equipment and use of hand and power tools.
  • Sets-up monitor and becoming clean-up support for park programs and special events.
  • Maintains good public relations with park visitors and staff.
  • Maintains gardens and landscaped areas of the park which includes plant installation and removal, weeding, soil conditioning, mulching, pruning, and applying pesticides.
  • Understand and follow best management practices for handling, mixing, and applying pesticides.
  • Provides excellent customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Maintenance - General
  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Experience using landscaping equipment and hand or power tools.
  3. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
Park – Maintenance Skilled
  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Experience using landscaping equipment and hand and power tools.
  3. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
  4. Experience in various types of building trades such as plumbing, painting, carpentry, and HVAC.
Summer Horticulturist
  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Possession of or ability to obtain a Delaware pesticide license.
  3. Experience using landscaping equipment and hand or power tools.
  4. Knowledge of native plants and invasive species.
  5. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
