Summary Statement

This position is a seasonal research assistant position with Delaware's Species Conservation and Research Program. This position will assist the State Herpetologist with various amphibian and reptile projects. The job responsibilities include conducting surveys for amphibians and reptiles; population monitoring of rare, threatened, and endangered species; conducting radio telemetry and trapping; identifying, measuring, and marking live animals; and managing databases in Excel, Access, and ArcGIS.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.  Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Conducts fieldwork to collect samples and survey data independently, but under the guidance of a technical superior.
  • Processes biological samples.
  • Utilizes and maintains various scientific instruments, boats and all-terrain vehicles.
  • Provides field (e.g., controlled sampling) and/or laboratory support to professional staff involved in research or program development for managing the quality of natural resources.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, professionalism and good communication skills, and interact as a team member with other staff and volunteers.
  • Maintains a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as required.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
  3. Knowledge of using a Geographic Information System (GIS).
  4. Knowledge of narrative report writing.
  5. Knowledge of Wildlife biology/management or closely related field. 
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
