Originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, Pea Patch Island also became a Union prison camp during the Civil War, housing up to as many as 12,595 Confederate prisoners of war at one time.

A variety of seasonal park positions may be available at Fort Delaware State Park:
Tram Operator: $12.50/hr. - responsible for transporting visitors to and from the Fort via a truck and trailer.
Grounds Maintenance: $12.00/hr. - responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment to include lawn mowing and custodial work, schedule is Monday – Friday and must be willing to work around boats and water.
Revenue Attendant: (Fee Collector): $11.00/hr. - will sell ferry tickets, park permits and retail items, provide customer service by explaining regulations, answer visitor requests, and provide information about the park and surrounding areas. Applicants must be available to work weekends and holidays as scheduled and must be willing to work around boats and water.
Boat Operator: $13.00 -$15.00/hr. - operate multiple styles of boats to transport staff, supplies and equipment across the Delaware River.
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled to meet facility needs and all must be willing to work around boats and water.
