Summary Statement

The incumbent in this position will be responsible for providing itinerant vision related education services to students in a variety of settings. Duties include: participating in the development of Individualized Education Programs, using and instructing Braille and functional vision and learning media assessments, adapting core curriculum and instruction in the expanded core curriculum, collaborating with families, school personnel, and related service providers and agencies.

  • Plans and implements educational lessons to address educational needs by accommodating for the specific eye condition.
  • Keeps accurate records and data to reflect student progress and provides mandated reports to schools and families.
  • Attends mandated meetings concerning the educational needs of the students and advocates for students’ needs.
  • Acquires and delivers books, adaptive equipment, and administers appropriate assessments to students and writes reports with recommendations.
  • Collaborates with school staff, other agencies and families to provide integrated services that meet the child’s visual needs.
  • Collaborates with families, schools and vocational rehabilitation staff to prepare students for transition out of school and into post-secondary education or employment.
  • Makes referrals for additional services that may be needed by the student to address visual needs and to transition into adult life.

  1. Applicant must meet State of Delaware Department of Education licensure and certification requirements as Teacher, Special Education.
  2. At the time of application, applicant must agree to achieve certification as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments as defined in the Delaware Education Code under the Professional Standards Board found at http://regulations.delaware.gov/AdminCode/title14/1500/1575.shtml within two years from the date of hire.
  3. Applicant must be able to demonstrate Braille literacy as evidenced by achieving a passing score on a Braille Proficiency test within two years from the date of hire.

This is a 10-month plus 38 day position.

License,Registrations and Certifications

  1. Copy of (unofficial) transcripts.
  2. Copy of Professional Status Certification or License, if available.
  3. Documentation of Praxis-I scores, if available.

Conditions of Hire

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.
