The DNERR has two main components, the Blackbird Creek Reserve in Townsend and the St. Jones Reserve in Dover. These sites include both brackish and freshwater estuaries, and represent the diverse estuarine ecosystems found throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Summary Statement

The Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve (DNERR), in the Division of Climate, Coastal and Energy is currently seeking applications for a casual/seasonal Assistant Education Coordinator position that will work part-time 29.5 hours per week. The primary assignments will include creating and running school and public programs, developing instructional materials, creating content for social media, and assisting with the planning and coordination of special events and teacher trainings.  This position also helps with exhibit animal care. Work is performed under various weather conditions. Additional work on weekends, evenings and holidays may be scheduled.

Essential Functions

 Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Plan and lead daily activities for school outreach and public programs.
  • Lead outdoor sport activities such as hikes, canoeing, boat trips and discovery labs.
  • Assist with graphic design of printed brochures and program flyers.
  • Ensure a fun, educational and safe environment for children.
  • Assist in the upkeep and posting of materials to the Reserve social media sites.
  • Supervise and mentor education volunteers.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and have fun.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Assistant Education Coordinator

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. One year's experience working with children and young adults such as academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher.
  3. One year's experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers.
  4. Knowledge of environmental education, biology, ecology or a related field.
  5. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming.
  6. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
