Shorebirds are an important part of the ecology of Delaware’s shorelines. But they are under threat; populations are declining. The Delaware Shorebird Project works to mitigate that threat, through research and monitoring, habitat protection, and management planning.

Summary Statement

This position is with Delaware's Species Conservation and Research Program to assist the State Coastal Avian Biologist with the Delaware Shorebird Project. Primary responsibilities include collecting migratory shorebird data during the May field season following standardized protocols, data entry, and assisting in field activities as needed including capturing and banding shorebirds using cannon nets and re-sighting marked shorebirds. Daily work requires walking up to 5 miles in sand, operating and trailering small boats, carrying equipment, and using a spotting scope to distinguish colored leg bands and coded flags on shorebirds at a distance. Duties outside the May field season include data entry and assisting with other field projects. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.

Essential Functions

  • Provides technical support in studies, surveys and research projects. 
  • Survey and monitor bird populations.
  • Trapping and banding.
  • Work cooperatively with other seasonals, volunteers and Division of Fish and Wildlife staff.
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the public. 
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports. 
  • Assists in data entry.
  • Maintains records and reports detailing daily activities.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Must be 18 years old.
  2. Knowledge of conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
  3. Knowledge of avian field monitoring.
  4. Knowledge of narrative report writing.
  5. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Additional Posting Information

This is an environmental stewardship job; the participants will work hard, sometimes in difficult conditions including mud, hot sun, and mosquitoes and flies.
