The DNERR has two main components, the Blackbird Creek Reserve in Townsend and the St. Jones Reserve in Dover. These sites include both brackish and freshwater estuaries, and represent the diverse estuarine ecosystems found throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Summary Statement

This position is responsible for providing a varied set of duties based on the operational priorities of the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve. These duties can include mowing, trimming, trash pick-up, janitorial services including cleaning of restrooms, snow and leaf removal, landscape bed maintenance, invasive species removal, tree/brush removal, trail maintenance, equipment repair and maintenance and other duties as needed. This position is a casual seasonal 29.5 hours/week, with anticipated working dates of April – October.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Performs grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, trail maintenance, landscape bed maintenance, trash removal, vegetation removal, leaf removal and snow/ice removal.
  • Operation of landscaping equipment and use of hand and power tools.
  • Maintains good public relations with visitors and staff.
  • Provides excellent customer service and information to visitors.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Experience using landscaping equipment and hand or power tools. 
  3. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
