The Delaware State Parks Beach Patrol is an elite group of men and women responsible for ocean rescue and beach safety at Delaware's award-winning state park beaches. Our beach patrol members receive advanced, nationally certified training, work in some of the most beautiful locations in the state, meet lifelong friends, compete in lifeguard competitions, and serve the people of Delaware, all while getting paid and having fun!

Summary Statement

The Ocean Lifeguard ensures the safety and well-being of all park visitors, particularly at the designated swimming beaches.  This is accomplished through accident prevention, public education and relations, rule enforcement, uninterrupted surveillance, and affecting a quick, safe, and simple rescue at any time.  Work is performed outdoors, in all environmental conditions to include long-term exposure to direct sunlight, wind, and rain, with extended periods of standing, walking, and sitting.  The beach patrol lifeguard will be faced with stressful situations that require immediate decision making.  Please see https://mailchi.mp/state/beachpatroltryout for more information about Spring Tryout Dates.  Applicants must be available to work weekends and holidays as scheduled at any of the Delaware State Parks as assigned.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all position in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.  Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Prevent all foreseeable accidents from occurring
  • Maintain constant surveillance over assigned area, both on and off stand
  • Educate patrons about all park and beach rules, and the inherent dangers of the ocean environment
  • Perform ocean/surf rescues as required, in assigned as well as other, park areas
  • Administer medical care consistent with training standards
  • Maintain all rescue and medical equipment assigned to the patrol
  • Actively participate in daily physical training and weekly drills
  • Protect and maintain swimming beach and park resources
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Hire

As a condition of hire applicants for this position must successfully pass a Swim/Run/Strength assessment.

As a condition of hire applicants for this position must successfully complete an In-Service Ocean Rescue Training Course and an Emergency Medical Responder Course.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  DNREC does not provide sponsorship for holders of H-1 B Visas.

Health & Fitness – Possesses adequate vision, hearing acuity, physical ability and stamina to perform the duties of an open water lifeguard as documented by a medical doctor, or the doctor’s designated physician’s assistant or ARNP (advanced registered Nurse Practitioner).

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
