HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT A CAREER COMBINING YOUR LEGAL PROWESS WITH PUBLIC SERVICE?
Understandably, many legal professionals are drawn to private practice. However, for many, the benefits of supporting state government and building a career in public service can be equally—if not more—rewarding.
A career with the State of Delaware may offer:
If these benefits appeal to you as a legal professional, the Delaware Department of Justice may be your employer of choice.
About the Office of the Attorney General
Delaware’s Attorney General—the State’s chief law enforcement officer—has broad responsibility for combating crime, upholding civil rights, safeguarding families, fighting fraud, and protecting consumers in the First State.
To carry out this mission, Attorney General Kathy Jennings is supported by teams of talented attorneys and staff across the Criminal, Civil, Family, Fraud and Consumer Protection, and Civil Rights and Public Trust Divisions. More than 500 dedicated professionals work together to serve all Delawareans with integrity and passion.
Deputy Attorneys General, supported by criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer protection laws, advise state agencies, ensure public access to open government, protect vulnerable populations, and much more.
The Deputy Attorney General will handle affirmative litigation and investigations in support of the Attorney General’s policy objectives, including multistate and in-state matters involving federal accountability, constitutional rights, environmental protection, firearms safety, healthcare, immigration, employee labor protections, and oversight of Delaware’s charitable entities. The role may include leading or supporting investigations that could lead to future impact litigation efforts.
In addition, the Deputy Attorney General may assist with the development and review of amicus briefs, rulemaking comments, and position letters on non-criminal matters. This includes working closely with other Deputy Attorneys General and a Paralegal to track incoming materials, conduct legal research, and prepare recommendations for the Attorney General’s consideration. The Deputy Attorney General may also participate in drafting original briefs, comments, or letters to reflect and implement the Attorney General’s policy goals.
The position may also include work related to the Attorney General’s charter revocation authority, requiring coordination with the federal Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) and the Delaware Division of Corporations. Other duties may be assigned by the Director of the Office of Impact Litigation as needed.
Candidates should possess exceptional organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and a proven track record of meeting deadlines. A comprehensive understanding of complex civil litigation is essential. Applicants must have a minimum of five years of legal practice experience.
Ideal candidates will bring at least ten years of experience handling complex litigation in both federal and state courts, along with excellent writing and oral advocacy skills. Familiarity with financial reporting and basic accounting principles is preferred.
We are seeking an individual who demonstrates a strong commitment to public service and advancing the public interest. Admission to the Delaware Bar, or a willingness to sit for the next Delaware Bar examination, is required.
