Introduction

Originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, Pea Patch Island also became a Union prison camp during the Civil War, housing up to as many as 12,595 Confederate prisoners of war at one time.

Summary Statement

A variety of seasonal park Interpreter positions may be available at Fort Delaware State Park:

Historical Blacksmith - is responsible for conducting interpretive programs and tours which will include a hands-on program for blacksmithing. 

Historical Interpreter - responsible for developing and conducting interpretive programs that will increase the public’s awareness of their surrounding environment and foster the appreciation, enjoyment, and utilization of Delaware State Parks.

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled to meet facility needs and must be willing to work around boats and water.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Lead school and public environmental programs tied to State standards to increase awareness and understanding of Delaware’s cultural resources.
  • Develop and maintain exhibits, educational and historical site material.
  • Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Plan, organize and conduct interpretive walks, programs and tours.
  • Perform custodial services in historic sites and offices.
  • Set-up, monitor and provide support for park programs and special events.
  • Willing and able to work in period costume.
  • Must demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Must comply with all park policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Fort Historical Blacksmith

  1. Experience working with children and young adults such as academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher.
  2. Experience with 19th Century blacksmithing.
  3. Knowledge of public speaking.
  4. Knowledge of natural, cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation.
  5. Possession of a valid drivers license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Historical Interpreter

  1. Six months experience working with children and young adults such as academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher.
  2. Knowledge of natural, cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation.
  3. Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  4. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
