Deputy Attorneys General, with critical support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public's access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.
Summary Statement
The Delaware Department of Justice is seeking a Communications Assistant to support the Press Secretary and Director of External Affairs in carrying out the Attorney General’s press and public communications strategy.
The Communications Assistant reports directly to the Director of External Affairs. Given the fast-paced and often unpredictable nature of the news cycle—and the responsibility to help coordinate media events and communications across all DOJ divisions—this individual must demonstrate strong time management, organizational, and writing skills. The public-facing nature of this position, along with frequent access to sensitive or confidential information, also requires a high level of discretion, professionalism, and sound judgment.
**This is a Casual/Seasonal position, currently approved to work up to 29.75 hours per week, and is non-pension eligible without healthcare and/or other benefits.
Essential Functions
- Draft press releases, speeches, talking points, and social media content for the Communications team
- Assist as needed with planning and executing press events and media inquiries
- Monitor local media outlets and compile daily news clips and media inquiry digests for DOJ leadership
- Assist with development of newsletters and other direct communications
- Perform photography and videography duties as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
- Three years experience in public relations or media relations to establish and promote a positive image and inform or influence specific audiences through the use of internal and external communications such as public forums, print or electronic media, speech writing, writing/editing, marketing, advertising, or special events.
- Three years experience in gathering, organizing, formatting, translating, or interpreting information into forms more easily understood by the media or public, and disseminating the information through the use of print, broadcast or electronic media.
- Three years experience in public speaking which includes gathering, preparing and presenting information to the public or media groups.
- Six months experience in developing, planning and directing public events, campaigns, programs, or services to meet community needs.
- Six months experience in determining and evaluating alternative courses of action to resolve or mitigate controversial issues.
- Six months experience in developing policies, procedures or programs for dissemination of information to the public or media groups.
