Summary Statement

The Media Relations Director is a senior-level staff member who assists the Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications in providing effective communications with the media, constituents and general public for the Democratic Caucus of the House of Representatives.

Essential Functions

Principal Duties

  • Research, develop, and draft speeches, articles, letters, press releases and other printed communications for assigned members.
  • Maintain caucus and individual members’ social media presences and use social media other new media efforts to effectively communicate the caucus’ and individual members’ messages.
  • Maintain productive ties with key press outlets.
  • Assist with the setting up and coordination of various media events, including interviews, news briefings, speeches, talk shows, etc.
  • Prepare and coach members for interviews with the press.
  • Working with the Digital Media Coordinator, oversee and produce material for the caucus podcast.
  • Advise Caucus leadership in media relations regarding pending legislation or other issues, in close collaboration with senior staff.
  • Aid in managing crisis communications and response.
  • Take photos and video for the Caucus and individual members at press conferences and various events and edit videos for publication on social media.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate for Media Relations Director will possess the following skills:

  1. Background in journalism as a reporter and/or professional communications experience.
  2. Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) grammar style and ability to write clearly and concisely.
  3. Ability to produce press releases, op-eds and other written documents on a deadline.
  4. Ability to balance multiple projects at one time.
  5. Ability to coordinate and plan press events.
  6. Knowledge and understanding of local politics and issues and how they impact caucus members.
  7. Experience using social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to promote an organization or individual.
  8. Experience with online social media tools and applications/programs, such as Canva, Audiogram, Biteable etc.
  9. Experience using digital cameras, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and video editing programs.
  10. Ability to research and review data for trends.

    Additional Posting Information

    Statewide travel to Legislative Hall in Dover during legislative session and to Legislative Hall or the Carvel State Building in Wilmington on some non-session days is required. 

    Staff are expected to work in Dover on days when the General Assembly is in session. Limited in-office days otherwise (Wilmington, Dover or Georgetown offices), with remote work available as approved.

    Writing Exercise: A writing exercise will be given at the time of interview.
