Summary Statement

The Camp Director position is responsible for the supervision of campers, the camp team and the camp program to ensure and maintain a fun, positive and safe camp environment. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating and evaluating camp activities as well as communicating camp matters to supervisor, camp parents, and park/camp team members. Additional duties include conducting programs for campers, managing supplies, camper paperwork, and/or cleaning.  Work is performed under various weather conditions. Duties may vary for each camp location.  
Camps are for children ranging in age between 5 years to 10 years old. Camp duties may include supervising and mentoring youth counselors and volunteers. Camps training begins late May/early June. Camps run Monday through Friday, June through mid-late August depending on site. Must be able to work camps, attend trainings and participate in all camp activities. This job will involve assisting with staff hiring and training on site.  In addition, this year-round position will serve as a Park Interpreter during the spring and fall, leading school and group programs and assisting with other programming duties conducted by the Nature Center.

  • Lead school environmental education and public interpretation programs relating to Delaware's natural and cultural resources.
  • Responsible for daily operation of day camp (including early prep & late follow-up work) from June- August.
  • Oversee day camp registration and maintain program records.
  • Supervise and mentor summer camp team.
  • Provide customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Plan and lead daily activities for summer camps.
  • Develop new games and activities.
  • Ensure a fun, educational and safe environment for children.
  • Assist with First-Aid duties. Supervise and mentor summer camp team.
  • May handle and care for live animals.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. At least 21 years of age.
  2. One year experience working in a camp program for children or young adults.
  3. One year experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers.
  4. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming.
  5. Knowledge of local plants, animals or history.
  6. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

As a condition of hire, applicants for this position must successfully pass a Swim assessment.
