Summary Statement

This position is a research assistant position with Delaware’s Species Conservation and Research Program to assist the State Herpetologist with various amphibian and reptile projects. The job responsibilities include conducting surveys for amphibians and reptiles; monitoring rare, threatened and endangered species; conducting radio telemetry and trapping; identifying, measuring and marking live animals; and managing databases in Excel, Access, and ArcGIS. Other duties may include training other seasonal staff; contacting landowners/managers for property access; scheduling  and coordinating fieldwork; contacting, managing, and training volunteers; preforming quality control of field data; preparing maps, tables, data summaries, and reports and assisting with analysis of data.

  • Provides technical support in studies, surveys, inspections and research projects.
     
  • Collects field samples and data.
     
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the public and the regulated community.
     
  • Interprets rules and regulations for assigned area.
     
  • Reviews permit applications and supplemental paperwork for approval or recommendation for disapproval.
     
  • Operates and maintains vehicles, boats and sampling equipment.
     
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
     
  • May assist in processing biological samples.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Control Technician III 
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: 

  1. Six months experience in conducting field work to collect environmental or ecological samples and survey data.
  2. Six months experience in analyzing and evaluating data.
  3. Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  4. Six months experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  5. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  6. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  7. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
