Summary Statement

This is the entry level performing the full range of essential functions. 

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.
  • Determines life safety and code compliance through evaluation of building design, construction materials and mechanical plant.
     
  • Provides interpretation of fire codes and standards.
     
  • Provides alternative strategies for acceptable modifications for fire safety and prevention.
     
  • Investigates fire and explosions; secures the scene, identify and gather physical evidence, test materials to establish facts and interviews witness to obtain information and sworn testimony.
     
  • Prepares reports of investigation.
     
  • Participates with other law enforcement agencies and insurance carriers to investigate fires and explosions and prosecutes responsible individual(s).
     
  • Conducts public fire and arson prevention presentations.
     
  • May testify in court cases involving fires, explosion and suspected arson.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Deputy Fire Marshal I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. At least 20 and 1/2 years of age.
  2. Possession of an Associates degree or higher in Fire Protection Technology, Fire Investigation, Criminal Justice or related field.
  3. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

  OR

  1. At least 20 and 1/2 years of age.
  2. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  3. Knowledge of conducting investigations which includes conducting interviews to obtain confidential information, gathering evidence and documenting findings.
  4. Knowledge of interpreting national and local building and fire codes.
  5. Knowledge of reviewing and approving site plans, building plans, fire protection system plans and mechanical plans.
  6. Knowledge of narrative report writing.
  7. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Additional Posting Information

Incumbents working four or more hours of work between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. the following day will receive 5% shift differential pay.

Conditions of Hire

Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.  

Applicants who are made a conditional offer of employment shall be required to successfully complete State of Delaware Council on Police Training.

Applicants who are made a conditional offer of employment shall be required to successfully complete Physical and Psychological Exam.

Examination: A written test is required.  You will need to retake the exam if you have not applied in DEL by 3/24/2010.
