Summary Statement

The position conducts technical laboratory support services in performing a variety of sample preparations, testing and analysis.  Duties: performing phlebotomy, collecting, processing and analyzing lab specimens, operating and maintaining the lab and its equipment in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations, performing on-site and quality control testing, maintaining lab logs, quality control records and submitting monthly reports, responsible for all lab related functions, participating in disaster exercises, events and other public health initiatives.

Selective Requirement

Selective Requirements must be met in addition to the job requirements.  Applicants who do not possess the selective requirement will not be qualified.

  1. Six months experience in phlebotomy which includes obtaining blood specimens for medical testing.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.
  • Prepares media, reagents and stains.  Computes and measures quantity.
  • Ensures orderly and environmentally correct storage of media, reagents, supplies, samples and equipment.
  • Ensures technically correct cleaning, sterilization and solvent treatment of equipment.
  • Conducts laboratory tests and analyses.
  • Operates and maintains various laboratory equipment.
  • Requisitions, inspects and distributes laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Records information on manual/computerized records, logs and related requests for analysis, shipping/transporting samples, ordering supplies/equipment, and status of water supply system.
  • Packs and ships, picks up or delivers supplies, samples and equipment.
  • May perform phlebotomy to obtain blood specimens for examination.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Laboratory Technician III
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. One year experience in conducting chemical or biological laboratory tests.
  2. One year experience in using laboratory equipment and instrumentation. 
  3. One year experience in laboratory sample handling. 
  4. Six months experience in performing mathematical and statistical computations on laboratory test data. 

Conditions of Hire
