Summary Statement

The incumbent in this class is responsible for conducting the maintenance, repair, testing, and preparation of voting machines and preparing electronic poll books for elections.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Prepares voting machines for all elections, conducting testing of machines, and ensuring proper software and other equipment and materials are operating properly and ready for deployment. 
     
  • Prepares electronic poll books for all elections, conducting testing, ensuring programming was completed, and poll books are operating properly and ready for deployment. 
     
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots issues with the voting machines, electronic poll books, and other equipment such as printers and scanners.
     
  • Makes major repairs of machines such as straightening machine frames to correct torsion damage, replacing public counters, motors and transmission assemblies.
     
  • Replacing component parts, conducting various diagnostic tests, and analyzing results to determine the best approach to replace a part/component.
     
  • Attends specialized training to acquire certification to work on equipment.  
     
  • Trains and supervises seasonals in the deployment, inspection, set up, and removal of voting machines, other equipment and materials. 
     
  • Trains poll workers in using voting machines and electronic poll books and applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures regarding elections.
     
  • Provides demonstrations on voting machines and electronic poll books to civic groups, neighborhood associations, legislators, and the public.
     
  • Maintains inventory of all election voting equipment, tools and parts.  Ensures all equipment is accounted for after each election.
     
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Voting Machine Technician
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months' experience in troubleshooting electronic equipment.
  2. Six months' experience in using electronic test equipment and hand tools.
  3. Six months' experience in record keeping.
  4. Knowledge of operating electronic equipment.
  5. Knowledge of components of electronic equipment.
  6. Knowledge of applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  7. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  8. Knowledge of prioritizing, assigning and reviewing the work of others.
  9. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
