Summary Statement

Principal responsibilities include the planning, requirements, design, coding, testing, debugging, system integration, and documenting of components of complex, multi-tier government systems.  Additionally, responsibilities include the overall management of the data management team, including staff reviews, delegation of projects, prioritization of initiatives, overseeing large-scale plans, and career development of the data management team.   

Responsible for evaluating user requests for new programs, modifications to existing programs, and system integration of off the shelf Products.  Programs can be defined as Data models, reports, or data integration applications.  Performs research and gathers relevant data to determine feasibility, appropriateness, and cost and time required.  Prepares detailed estimates in order to obtain approval to proceed.  Prepares detailed program specifications. 

Analyzes, designs and implements accurate, secure, efficient, logical and physical data bases and coordinates database development applying knowledge of database design standards and database management system. Identifies and resolves production and/or applications development problems related to the use of the database and/or reporting design. Reviews project request describing database user needs and determines if project requires creating series of new programs or modifying existing programs that access data stored in databases. Determines and enters changes to data dictionary descriptions, including type, structure, and intended use of data within system. Maintains data integrity by working to eliminate redundancy. Creates description to enable programmer analysts to understand how programs should access data. Writes description of how user accesses data, referred to as logical database. Writes physical database description, such as location, space requirements, and access method, to protect company data resources against unauthorized access and accidental destruction, according to computer industry standards and knowledge of database management system. Creates system and user documentation.  Monitors ongoing program and system performance.  Provides training and mentors less experienced team members. Senior Data Modeler should be capable of working on significantly large number projects simultaneously.    

The Sr. Data Modeler must be an experienced manager with a minimum of 5 years of management experience, preferably in IT, with particular emphasis on the specific discipline for which he/she is responsible.  The Sr. Data Modeler must be a fast learner with excellent communication, documentation, and follow-up skills, and must be comfortable speaking in front of audiences, technical and non-technical alike, at all levels of the organization.  The Sr. Data Modeler must be able to resolve conflicts within the team and interface directly with other SDMs, with the Team Leader, and with counterparts in other agencies in order to accomplish stated objectives.  The Sr. Data Modeler must be able to work with minimal supervision as part of a multidisciplinary team.  Must be able to work with other members of a world-class Enterprise Data Team to deliver solutions on time and on budget.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Senior Data Modeler

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in IT, related field OR equivalent work experience.
  • Possess a minimum of 10 years’ experience of data management concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Possess a minimum 10 years of experience in the IT industry and at least 5 years in managing projects, people and process.
  • Possess a minimum of 4 years’ experience in data technologies with at least 2 years in data modeling, data integration and reporting.
