Introduction

 

The Division of Air Quality monitors and regulates all emissions to the air. It issues permits to construct and permits to operate air contaminant sources. It maintains emission inventories from business and industry, and develops the State’s implementation plan as required by the Clean Air Act. The Division adopts new regulations and supports enforcement of existing regulations, and permits and inspects asbestos removal efforts.

Summary Statement

This is an entry level position in the Ambient Air Monitoring group for the Division of Air Quality.  This position will assist in all aspects of technical support and will work closely with the group manager in all areas related to the operation of the State's ambient air monitoring network.  This position will help to develop solutions to problems with analytical issues, verify and correct issues as necessary and verify the performance of new and existing monitoring equipment.  Duties will include collecting field samples throughout the year.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
     
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
     
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
     
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
     
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  2. Knowledge of controlled sampling, monitoring and testing techniques.
  3. Knowledge of analyzing and evaluating data.
  4. Knowledge of technical report writing.
  5. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
