Summary Statement

These positions in New Castle County provide a unique opportunity for selected applicants to gain exposure in many aspects of mosquito control in Delaware.  Employees in this position will work largely outdoors under various weather conditions, possibly performing any of the following: routine mosquito breeding surveillance and abatement activities; collecting mosquito disease data; addressing citizen mosquito complaints; conducting public education efforts regarding mosquito control, prevention and disease protection; collecting specimens from the Statewide network of mosquito traps, and draw blood and maintain chicken flocks throughout the State for virus surveillance.  In addition, this position may involve the operation of boats and tracked all-terrain vehicles.

Essential Functions

  • Provides technical support in studies, surveys, inspections and research projects.   
  • Collects and processes biological samples, field samples and data.  
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the public and the regulated community.  
  • Interprets rules and regulations for assigned area.  
  • Reviews permit applications and supplemental paperwork for approval or recommendation for disapproval.  
  • Operates and maintains vehicles, boats and sampling equipment.  
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.          
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.  
  • Ability to work in an outdoor setting with large amount of walking.  
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:    

  1. At least 18 years old 
  2. Knowledge of biological field sampling or laboratory procedures.
  3. Knowledge of environmental conditions or ecological principles.
  4. Knowledge of operating or maintaining trucks, SUVs, marsh ATVs or small boats with outboard motors.
  5. Knowledge of worker protection practices or worker safety procedures. 
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

** This is an environmental stewardship summer job, not a summer camp experience. Participants will work hard, sometimes in difficult conditions including heat, humidity, mud, mosquitoes and biting flies.
