Originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, Pea Patch Island also became a Union prison camp during the Civil War, housing up to as many as 12,595 Confederate prisoners of war at one time.

A variety of seasonal park positions are available at Fort Delaware State Park, which may include the following:
Grounds Maintenance: $9.25/hr - responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities, and equipment to include lawn mowing and custodial work, schedule is Monday – Friday and must be willing to work around boats and water.Revenue Attendant (Fee Collector): $9.25/hr - will sell ferry tickets, park permits and retail items, provide customer service by explaining regulations, answer visitor requests, and provide information about the park and surrounding areas. Applicants must be available to work weekends and holidays as scheduled and must be willing to work around boats and water.
