Summary Statement

This position will be responsible for conducting in-depth background investigations of applicant’s personal histories that are seeking employment with the Department of Correction. It will be necessary to interview past employers, references, friends and other individuals who may provide intimate information regarding the applicant’s suitability in performing the job responsibilities of his/her employment. The incumbent will be required to make written, telephone and personal contact with the public, State and municipal agencies. The incumbent will be required to be proficient in the utilization of various law enforcement computer applications such as DELJIS/CJIS, NCIC and LEISS. The incumbent will provide detailed written reports of his/her findings and recommendations.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts personal background investigations for all applicants applying for positions in the Department of Correction.
  • Interviews applicants, their family, friends, past employers and references to gather information in determining their suitability for employment.
  • Utilizes law enforcement computer program applications of DELJIS/CJIS, NCIC and LEISS in the furtherance of investigating any prior criminal history and/or involvement with any criminal element.
  • Provides a comprehensive and detailed narrative report of his/her investigative findings accompanied by supporting documentation gathered during the investigation.
  • Makes recommendations regarding an applicant’s suitability for employment.
  • Interprets and applies applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Internal Affairs Investigator

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Ten years minimum experience as a Police Officer.
  2. Experience in conducting investigations that includes conducting interviews to obtain confidential information, gathering evidence and documenting findings.
  3. Experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  4. Experience in civil, criminal and administrative proceedings.
  5. Experience writing comprehensive narrative reports.
  6. Experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.

Conditions of Hire

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.
