The land that became Alapocas Run State Park was donated to the city of Wilmington in the early 1900s by local industrialist William Bancroft. Alapocas Run became a state park in 2002.

Summary Statement

A variety of seasonal park positions may be available at ARSP, which may include the following:

  1. Lead Rock Climbing Instructor: position is the lead instructor for public and group rock climbing programs for Alapocas Run State Park.   Job duties will include being the camp director for the summer rock climbing camps.
  2. Rock Climbing Instructor: position will lead outdoor rock climbing programs for camps, groups and the public. The instructor will assist with activities for the summer rock climbing camps and aftercare.

Essential Functions

Lead Rock Climbing Instructor

  • Write and produce program curriculum and procedures.
  • Conduct top rope rock climbing programs.
  • Maintain rock climbing equipment and associated paperwork.
  • Supervise campers ages 8 -15 years old.
  • Conduct camp games, activities and crafts.
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Conduct programs in all weather and uneven terrain.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Rock Climbing Instructor

  • Leads multiple rock climbing programs for camps, groups and the public. This can include activities such as top rope climbing, rappelling, bouldering, and canoeing.
  • Ensures a fun, educational and safe environment for participants and staff.
  • Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Lead Rock Climbing Instructor

  1. At least 20 years of age.
  2. One year experience working in a camp program for children or young adults.
  3. One year experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers.
  4. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming.
  5. Knowledge of rock climbing through rock climbing training, school facility in top rope rock climbing, rappelling or equivalent work experience at a gym, rock climbing camps or other specialty groups.
  6. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Rock Climbing Instructor

  1. At least 20 years of age.
  2. Knowledge of rock climbing through rock climbing training, school facility in top rope rock climbing, rappelling or equivalent work experience at a gym, rock climbing camps or other specialty groups.
  3. Six months experience working in a camp program for children or young adults.
  4. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming.
  5. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
