Summary Statement

Primary responsibilities of the position will be to monitor piping plovers, oystercatchers, gulls, and terns in Sussex County, Delaware. Responsibilities include monitoring nests and broods, protecting habitat and nests with fences, signs, predator exclosures, and by interacting with the public, coordinating volunteers to provide public outreach, and using and maintaining 4WD vehicles and boats. Daily work requires walking up to 5 miles in sand, carrying equipment, and using a spotting scope to distinguish colored leg bands and flags on shorebirds at a distance. Other duties include data entry and management, and preparing reports using GIS, Excel, and Access.  This position may help count migrating raptors at a hawk watch station in the fall.

  • Provides technical support in studies, surveys, inspections and research projects.
     
  • Collects field samples and data.
     
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the public and the regulated community.
     
  • Interprets rules and regulations for assigned area.
     
  • Reviews permit applications and supplemental paperwork for approval or recommendation for disapproval.
     
  • Operates and maintains vehicles, boats and sampling equipment.
     
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
     
  • May assist in processing biological samples.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Control Technician II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
  1. Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
  2. Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  3. Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  4. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  5. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
